 How & Why? Air resistance in ventilation system’s is mainly determined by air speed in the system. Air resistance grows directly proportional to air flow. This phenomenon is known as pressure loss.
A Traditional HVAC system requires an outside unit, known as a compressor. The refrigerant “Line Sets” run from the compressor to the “Evaporator Coil” housed in the Air Handler, {which requires an expensive - fabrication and install}. That air then is moved by fan to a “Trunk” that air flows through a duct damper which has individual duct’s tapped to the trunk then each duct runs out to the individual rooms.
The placement of the Air Handler to the “Trunk” will vary depending on the homes construction. The farther the two components are from each other the more pressure loss is incurred. Once the conditioned air is pushed to the “Trunk” that conditioned air then travels to and through the individual ducts to each room creating more resistance, causing additional pressure loss..
By that time, duct loss has occurred because of pressure loss, leaky joints and inadequate insulation of each duct. The reason some rooms have better flow than others.
So you can picture why some rooms farthest from the Air Handler have a harder time getting comfortable. So what you pay for at the air handler is not what you are receiving at the other end in the home.
It gets worse-
When you set your thermostat to 75° to condition a back bedroom for 70° now you know why. Also that thermostat cannot read an ambient temperature in a separate room. Little to no control over most rooms in the home. Increased energy usage –decreased comfort. Even the most efficient systems are only as efficient as an antiquated design can be.
